Sequential read speed seemed to run about the same for both drives throughout the test, while the direct connection SATA pulled ahead with the burst speed ever so slightly, by a margin of less then 3%.

Real Time Transfer

Time
Direct SATA Connection – no dock
4min 10 seconds
eSATA Connection – with dock
3min 53 seconds

Interestingly in the real time transfer test, the eSATA connection beat the direct SATA connection by nearly 20 seconds.

Ultimately we can deduce though the SATA QuickPort Duo doesn’t impede transfer times compared to a direct SATA connection, and may even speed up real time transfers slightly.

Cost

This drive dock might be a little too pricey for some, coming in at around £45.

  1. I have this dock. The Sata controller onboard is 1.5 Gbps. Real world max throughput is thus about 130MB/s.

Why does nobody test these things with SSDs and on internal 6.0 Gbps ports?
