Test Rig

  • CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k @ 4.3 GHz
  • Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V PRO
  • RAM:  8 GB Kingston HyperX @ 1600 MHz

Methodology

So unlike the peripherals I normally review, hard drives have a wealth of synthetic and real-life benchmarks available. I’ve run a few tests, trying to get a good mixture of the two approaches, for your eager perusal. These will primarily answer the question ‘how fast is this drive, really?’, particularly in relation to the Crucial M4 drive that remains a popular choice and I also happen to have on hand. Both drives are on a SATA III 6 Gb/s port and AHCI is enabled.

Synthetic Benchmarks

  • CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1c
  • AS SSD
  • ATTO Disk Benchmark
  • Sisoft Sandra Physical Disks Benchmark
  • HD Tune Pro
  • PCMark 7 Professional System Storage

Real World Benchmarks

  • Windows 7 x64 SP1 Install Time
  • Bootracer Windows 7 Boot Time

Here, we see the M3 Pro falls a little short of its advertised sequential read speeds, but still delivers amazing write performance that is a considerable distance ahead of the M4’s abilities – 353 vs 201 MB/s in sequential write and 354 vs 107.3 in 512K write. 4K performance is quite similar between the two drives, with the exception of the final benchmark which shows another write speed advantage for the M3 Pro.

Looking back at prior SSD tests, the M3 Pro has similar read speeds to the Samsung 830, OCZ Vertex 3 and Kingston HyperX, but much higher write scores once again – 353 MB/s compared to 316, 277 and 307 MB/s, respectively.
