The Zalman Z-Machine 770W Extreme PSU
The unit itself is quite large and relatively heavy for a 770W PSU. It has a dark shiny silver exterior with black and blue sleeving for the main cables.
One side is dedicated to the usual honeycomb grill, power socket and power switch. Through the grill, the most prominent feature is a large silver heatsink.
The opposite side to this is much simpler with just a large Zalman logo printed into the side. Despite, not being particularly styled or colourful, the Z-Machine 770W does still look very sleek and attractive with the silky silver colour.
The last side which displays anything of importance has the table of specifications. A quick scan reveals this unit has four 12V rails. This contributes most of the power along with the 3.3 and 5V rails – as much as 748W.
There are a couple of warnings and a whole host of symbols for almost everything along bottom.
As I mentioned before, this unit is a little bigger than most ATX PSUs and so is able to implement a 140mm fan as opposed to the more conventional 120mm impeller. Again, the fan is relatively simple with a black fan and white Zalman sticker bang in the centre. A silver grill protects the fan and all the other inner components.
The advantages of the 140mm are that there should be a greater airflow which means the impeller can spin at lower speeds and so churn out a lot less noise. The downside of course is that the size of the unit is greater and so some users might struggle getting it in a few of the smaller cases.
The bottom is just left with the dark silver finish – nothing extra.
Finally, that brings us to the connectors and due to the Zalman Extreme PSU being modular, there are a total of seven sockets on the front for all of the ODD/HDD/SATA and PCI-e cabling. The majority of these sockets are 5 pin except for an 8-pin for the PCI express cable.
