Methodology

Testing power supplies is a bit of a mine field, as many sites – like our own – test rail voltages to measure stability and tightness to the ideal rail rating. For a multitude of reasons these are imperfect tests. That said, without several tens of thousands of pounds worth of equipment, it’s not possible to accurately measure PSU ratings.

With that in mind, we still use our multimeter rail test during idle and load states to give something; if at least a real world comparison between units. It’s not perfect, and we would ask our readers to not base your PSU purchase solely on this review, but hopefully we can give some measure of comparing units. If not, then at least you know these units are capable of running out test setup for a prolonged period of time; or not.

The software used to load the PC was Prime95 (Large FFTs), and the 3Dmark benchmark running at full tilt to load the GPU.

Results

Please Read: Recently several members have said that instead of the usually slightly ambiguous colourful graphs they would actually prefer standardised tables of results for reviews. For this review I’ve not produced the usual graphs and have given them exactly what they wanted, standard – rather mundane – tables. Please let us know if this is better/worse by either mailing us, or telling us in the forums.

The voltage readings are all well within ATX specifications and for the most part keep inside 1% of the rated voltage. Compared to some of the other units, the results are not quite as tight but they are still very good with no fails at all.

At 450W we are almost able to reach the maximum output for the Silent Pro M500 and the rails are a little looser at this higher load output but still good enough to stay within the ATX limits

The efficiency of the Silent Pro 500w is very good as we would have expected with it being 80 PLUS certified and it reaches a 0.99 PF rating at full load which is really very good indeed. The power consumption is about average, very good at idle but at load it’s somewhere in the middle of the bunch.

Noise

The 135mm is really very good and at just 600RPM, the noise levels are very hard to notice at all which is very impressive. Even once the fan speed increases the noise levels never get very higher and the unit certainly lives up to its ‘Silent’ name tag.

Cost

At around the £70 price mark, this PSU is well priced and would be a great buy for many enthusiasts except perhaps for overclockers who do need higher power outputs than this 500w unit can provide.
