Synology DS411 Disk Station Rundown

Software

Having reviewed quite a few Synology products in the past, I’m going to note just some of the upgrades since I did my previous software coverage back with the DSM 3.1. Today we’ve evolved into 3.2, giving a couple new things that I’ll touch on now.

The layout of the DSM is the same as we’ve seen in the past. The setup process is also almost identical. You create a volume (though this is now purportedly much quicker on RAID setups) which still takes 30 minutes or so, but that’s getting better with each software update.

One of the new features with 3.2 is that you’re able to access all the features of the disk station from a remote location through your browser, not just FTP. However, the problem is that unless you have one of the pre-determined routers, you’re out of luck. There’s quite a few, but my router wasn’t there.

That leaves you doing manual port forwards, individually for each service you want to use. This isn’t the end of the world, but it’s a little lengthy.

The download station is still pretty much the same, with a few improvements. I still really like how you can add an RSS for your favourite download account or torrent website. The list of supported sites has now been increased, with all the popular download sites allowing you to login via the disk station and have all your downloads through one location. This also lets you have downloads running overnight without having your main PC system online.

One thing you do need to take into consideration though is to use the video player, you need VLC installed. No alternatives.

DSM 3.2 also features improved mobile functionality, allowing the management of your Disk Station via your Android of Apple handset. Unfortunately without either of these phones to hand, I wasn’t able to examine this feature.
