The Gainward “Goes like Hell” 8600GT

At first glance, this 8600GT from Gainward is quite odd looking. Around the hidden cooler, and around the edges of the whole card is a large black and red grill; the GPU’s first burkha. I’ve been told by Gainward that this is merely for aesthetic purposes, there is no cooling benefit from it.

Cooler

Taking off the large shroud/grill you can see the cooler underneath. It’s a simple petal cooler design with a small, central fan surrounded by large black heatsink fins.

Placed ontop of the memory chips are some chunky, crimson RAM sinks which look very similar to the Vvikoo 8600GT ones.

The cooling setup is held on by 4, small low profile screws. They shouldn’t cause any clearance issues during installation.

If you take apart the cooler, you can see that the fan is made by a company called T&T.

Naked core. Always a crowd pleaser.

Power

The fan is powered by a small 2pin connector which sits neatly on the motherboard. No cable management needed here.

The card itself, requires a 6pin PCI-e power cable to run. The connector for this can be found at the front end:

Connectivity

At the rea of the card you have several ports: one DVI, one VGA and a single HDMI. The latter port allows you to directly feed your HD TV from your computer without the need for a DVI to HDMI converter.

This 8600GT has a single SLI bridge connector which allows two cards to be linked together for up to twice the performance of a single card.

Installation

Installation of 8600GT cards are usually problem free, and this one was no exception. However that cooling shroud is quite nice and unfortunately makes this a double slot card. Make sure you have some space next your main PCi-e 16x socket for this wide boy to park itself.
