Some mounting issues may occur with certain setups that only have space for two hard drives in a cage, such as the Thermaltake Armor +. Some may also have issues mounting a fan on the underside of the HDD if they have a large cluster of disks.

Methodology

To test HDD coolers, we leave the disk of choice at idle without the fan and note its temperature. The drive is then stressed as much as possible to generate its maximum heat output and the temperature is noted again. We then repeat this test with the cooler attached and compare the difference in temperatures.

Processor AMD AM2 6000+ Dual Core
Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2
RAM Corsair XMS2 6400 2GB (2x1GB)
HDD Maxtor DiamondMax 20 80GB SATA
Power supply Jeantech Storm 700w
Graphics card Onboard – ATI Xpress 1250 series
Temperature monitor Speedfan and Temperature Probe

The HDD was stressed by running HDTach, Sandra HDD benchmark and copying 3x8gb files from one location on the disk to another.
