Ten tips for better poker gaming

If poker is your passion then it stands to reason that you want to be able to perform to the highest level possible. After all, what’s the point unless you’re on a course of constant improvement?

To get you started, here are ten tips that should start to show an almost immediate change in the way you play.

1. Choose your opponents carefully

It’s a fact that we only ever improve if we’re forced to raise our game. So when you’re competing against others it’s a good idea to seek out players who are better than you. Or, where you’re playing against the game, set it at a level above the one you feel most comfortable with.  Yes, you might get beaten or not do as well to begin with. But before long you’ll see an overall improvement.

2. Get the right equipment

You’ve probably heard the expression “a worker’s as only as good as their tools”. This is equally true about a poker player. With the decline in console gaming, getting the right hardware has never been more important. As well as investing in a first rate gaming PC, having peripherals like a purpose-made gaming mouse will make playing a slicker and more enjoyable experience.

3. Sit comfortably

Serious poker players put in serious sessions. So it also makes sense to get yourself a chair that’s made for the purpose. You’ll not only be able to sit comfortably for longer, they also have many other benefits as they have been ergonomically designed. This can even mean that you’ll be able to concentrate more intensely, for longer periods of time.

4. Take a break

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t take regular breaks from your gaming. This gives you a chance to re-set both mentally and physically. This is especially relevant for online poker which is very mentally demanding. It’s also a good idea to do something like listen to music while you’re on your break to get your head in a different space altogether.

5. Stay hydrated and nourished

Poker may not be as physically demanding as other sports. But good hydration and nutrition is almost as important. For the former, water is best. Energy drinks may feel like they’re giving you a boost, but the caffeine can actually cloud your judgement. In terms of nutrition, you can be a bit more flexible but it’s still a good idea to focus on protein-rich options like nuts if you can.

6. Timetable your gaming

Successfully playing poker is always going to be all about discipline. While it might be fun to play for random sessions whenever you feel like it, it’s not always best. Instead, set yourself a fixed timetable over the week and try to stick to thiose sessions. And remember to include those breaks that we’ve covered offer in Tip 4 of this guide.

7. Stay focused

There’s one thing that everyone who aims to perform at a high level has in common: focus. So this is something that you’re going to have to develop if you want to maximise your potential. Hopefully, many of the tips we’re giving you here will help you to enhance and improve this aspect of your gaming. But it also has to come from inside you as a desire to constantly improve.

8. Set some goals

Being goal-oriented is another facet of all great players. And there are plenty of ways that you can do this in poker. You could gradually build up your winnings, of course this won’t be simple but set a time period for how much you’ve expected to have won – just remember to start small. Goals don’t end when you achieve them. They just get tougher and more challenging.

9. Care about the game

All of this is only going to be achievable if you are passionate about the games that you’re playing. Pick the right poker variation for you. Like everything in life, it’s only if you can put your heart and soul into it that you’re really going to reap the rewards.

10. Follow your favourite streamers

Last, but not least, if want to be the best, learn from the best. See how the gretest poker players in the world through waching events and tournament play or just by watching them on streaming services like Twitch. This can be an invaluable way to get great tips and pick up the sorts of techniques that are sure to elevate your own gaming to heights you might never have thought possible before.

So there you have them. Ten great tips to boost your poker game – and now it’s time to put them into practice!
