Plextor is not a name that you would have immediately associate with SSD manufacture – they’re probably best known to old timers as a leading manufacturer of CD/DVD drives – but they’ve been in the business a while. Unlike Intel or Samsung who have made their mark with their own brand controllers and software, Plextor has opted to go for a third party Marvell controller. These controllers are used to great effect in the popular Crucial M4, but require some special firmware to really unlock their potential.

Square Enix’s worldwide technology director, Julien Merceron, has said the next generation of consoles needs to include the facility for cloud storage in order to take advantage of the game changing effects it has.
“When it comes down to future hardware platforms, and official home consoles, I think its going to be instrumental,” he said in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. The point he’s making, is that it removes the need for expensive hardware upgrades, which would circumvent issues like Microsoft’s Xbox 360 dashboard update needing more than the original 512MB provided with the memory cards issued with the Arcade edition.
Microsoft is soon to make available to its Xbox 360 players, the ability to store their gamer tag data on a cloud platform. Some Xbox Live Arcade titles are already supporting this storage. This will mean that gamers can log onto friends’ Xbox consoles and access their messages and other account info.
From that point there will be no Xbox tag recovery – which can be quite a lengthy process – and will mean you don’t need to take your hard drive to different houses or carry around thos little 512MB flash storage devices. There is no word on when the cloud service will show up for real, but it’s likely to come out some time this year, allowing gamers [...]
