This is the ‘pure white’ version of the EC2. It apparently has a fancy coating to stop you getting sweaty palms, we’ll see about that later. It’s also available with a rubber outer coating for better grip.

The mouse features the usual 2 buttons+mouse wheel configuration on the top, along with another 2 thumb buttons on the right side.

It has an interesting shape to it, though.

The mouse wheel is illuminated and it’s colour depends on which DPI setting you’re using. You get red for 500…

and blue for 2000 DPI.

I found that in daylight it was quite difficult to see these colours, especially considering two of the colours look, at least to me, fairly similar and the red illumination isn’t really bright enough to make out very well at all.

I employed the age-old close your curtains and block out that nasty sunlight method to see what the colours looked like when you could properly see them and tada…

Pretty.

The right, left click and two side buttons seem to have a lot of play in them, you need to push them quite far to get a click compared to most mice I’ve used. This gives the buttons a ‘squidgy’, cheap sort of feel.

And this mouse wheel, folks, is apparently the most durable mouse wheel you can get on a mouse today, so if you were worried that one day you’d go to switch weapon in-game or scroll down on a web page and the mouse wheel might decide it doesn’t like this idea and goes on strike, have no fear, Zowie have it covered.

Now, I’ve still got a few old mice around here that are at least 10 years old that have taken a lot of abuse and their mousewheels all still work so I’m not sure how I’m going to test that one. I suppose I’ll have to take their word for it.

It’s also supposed to be the most precise mouse wheel, as it uses an optical sensor to detect mouse wheel movement as opposed to a mechanical system.

On the bottom of the mouse you’ll find the optical sensor and the DPI switch.

I’m not sure having the DPI switch on the bottom of the mouse is a good idea, having to turn over the mouse to change DPI setting could get a little irritating; it’s certainly not something that can be done on the fly.

Nice large feet there, to ensure it glides smoothly across any surface.

The Zowie EC2 is a wired mouse and as such, it has a gold plated USB connector hanging off that long grey thing there. This only really improves durability and helps contribute to the price tag.
