Methodology

Mouse mats and other peripherals fall into an interesting category for testing, as your opinion on them tends to be very personal, as the mat, mouse or keyboard has to be right for you, beyond having the specifications to do what you want with it. Therefore these reviews can be highly subjective so as always, please make sure to test a peripheral for yourself before you buy it.

However with that said, our testing methods involve using the mat over prolonged gaming and general usage periods to test its gaming ability and comfort.
The games used for testing were as follows:

  • Battlefield 2
  • Flash Games

Games

Battlefield 2

Battlefield 2 despite being quite an old title is perfect for testing mouse pads as it is a fast paced first person shooter requiring quick reflexes and high levels of accuracy. Overall, I found myself competing much better at the top of the leader boards with the Steelseries QcK Mass. I think this may be down to the really smooth surface that allowed my mouse to glide across it and thus I could quickly move to different areas of the screen.

Flash Games

In terms of Flash games, I tried I variety of different genres: shooters, strategy, puzzles and more so as to try out as many different gaming styles as possible. The QcK Mass proved very capable for all the different types and at no point did I notice any sliding or movement from the pad – the rubber backing doing its job well here.

Comfort

As a result of the very smooth surface and 6mm thickness, the pad is incredibly comfortable thus you aren’t left with a numb wrist after prolonged usage. Moreover, as it’s a cloth mat any sweat is soaked up so you don’t get wet patches left on the surface.

Cost

The Steelseries QcK Mass has a price tag of 11.99 Euros which is roughly £9 – as you can see no biggy compared to many gaming surfaces which tend to head into the 20’s.
