QNAP TS-119 Turbo NAS

Everything Else

There isn’t a lot left to say about the TS-119. There’s not really any testing that can be done beyond using the features and seeing if they work as intended which they all do very nicely. There are some more advanced features that I’m sure the hardcore among you will begrudge us for not testing, but this NAS device is aimed at the small business and bordering home enthusiast, all the bases have been reasonably covered.

There were a couple of gripes I had with the NAS drive though. For starters, the documentation provided within the box is out of date, meaning the pictures are from the TS-109 not the 119 which does make installation a little bit harder than it could have been. There may be more up to date info on the CD, but it seems a shame to not update the printed media too.

Also, the drive itself does take quite a while to boot. Hitting the on button can see the little linux powered system take 2 minutes plus to boot, which is a shame, but not the end of the world. I imagine most users will leave it on most of the time, but the more power concious among you will no doubt spend a fair bit of time turning it off and on again; sitting through the couple of minutes of boot time with mild annoyance. I’m sure this could be averted by simply using a more modern and faster drive however, so this is something to consider.

Cost

This part may surprise some, and others not so much, but the cost for the TS-119 NAS from QNAP is actually reasonably high. It can be bought with a 2TB drive in place for over a couple of hundred quid. Without though, and in the state I received it, you’re looking to dish out around £180.
