Cooler Master Hyper 612S
While I’ve certainly had more difficulty installing other coolers in the past, due to the size and the near 1KG weight of the Hyper 612s, it wasn’t a cakewalk . The backing plate is universal which keeps things simple and the instruction leaflet(s) is easy to understand, the problem comes from always feeling like you need another pair of hands.
While holding the quite heavy cooler in place, you also need to press it into the mount to make sure the springs on the screws depress far enough so that you can attach the bolts on the other side. You also need to make sure you line the holes up correctly. While of course you could take the motherboard out, which might alleviate some of the issues, it’s just an unfortunate symtom of a cooler this size. We can’t use push pins because it’s too heavy, but the mounting system for it is still a bit of a pain.
Once installed though, you can see what a monster this HSF is.

CPU frequency was 1.6ghz at Idle and 3.3GHZ under Load.
To test this cooler I took the temperatures of the CPU cores in idle and load states. To do so, a fresh install of Windows 7 is made. From there I used RealTemp to monitor CPU core temperatures and several runs of Wprime 1024 to load the chip. While there is some fluctuation in temperatures recorded by RealTemp, the average was taken as the definitive temperature.
For idle tests, the test rig was left to sit at idle for 20 minutes before taking the representative temperatures. For load state, Wprime was run several times over a period of 20 minutes and again the temperatures were taken.
For comparison purposes, the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2 cooler was used.
All temperature are in degrees celsius. Ambient temperature was 19 degrees.

A clear win for the Hyper 612 and impressive temperatures over all; this is expected though, as the 612 is nearly 3 times the cost of the Freezer. That said, it should be possible with a cooler like this to do some very impressive overlocking.
One of they key features of the Cooler Master 612s is that it’s quite. Well I’m pleased to say it stands up to these claims and is near silent, even in normal mode. However, add in the module for reduced fan speed and you have a fan that is completely inaudible unless you place your ear right next to it.
This is one quiet cooler.
