Jeantech Unicorn
The Unicorn: Externals
Upon opening the giant box and relieving the case of the Styrofoam protectors, it is clear that the big box is home to a big case. To be honest, the height and width aren’t too huge, but in terms of its depth it is very long. This could prove a problem if put under a small desk as there is definitely a possibility of it sticking out. However, the aesthetics are very easy on the eye and sleek black colour and silver metal complement each other nicely.
The acrylic panel which is situated on one side of the case is protected and kept clean by a plastic cover and stops any scratching occurring in transit that would ruin the finish.
The length of this particular case may be partly due to the front panel being hinged in order to allow it to open revealing the front of the drive bays and the various ports:
- 2x USB 2.0
- Microphone Jack
- Headphone Jack
Evidently, this feature makes the front of the case very tidy and gives the sense of professional quality as it allows some extra styling improving the aesthetics. In this instance, the front panel zigzags outwards with the front being completely plain with the product name – Unicorn – and a series of shiny notches on either side. The notches also allow airflow to filter through the front panel and into the main chamber.
This technique has been used on many cases in recent times and appears to be becoming more popular with many manufacturers using this concept.
As a result of the hinged front panel, the problem of where to situate the power and reset buttons would have been considered by the manufacturer. For the Unicorn, they have decided to place them on the top of this panel along with two LEDs. This seems a sensible choice as it allows easy access to them without looking out of place.
Also, the unique side panel opening is a welcome edition giving the user immediate access to the inside of the case without the hassle of screws even if they are thumb screws. The user simply pulls the handle and the panel clicks open revealing the innards. To close, the panel just clicks back into place.
Also, on this side of the case, is an air vent with an 80mm fan bracket behind it. This is built into the drive bay unit and so will dissipate heat produced by these components. This too is a useful extra as in most instances there is only room for a couple of fans at the back.
The opposite side of the Unicorn, is an acrylic transparent panel allowing the use to view there ‘tech porn’ without having to actually open up the case. Whilst the power is on, this acrylic will be lit up by red LEDs.
Another feature of the acrylic panel are two air vents that encourage an air flow through the case in order to increas the cooling potential. The vents are formed by a series of plastic strips and therefore despite breaking up the smooth acrylic surface, they don’t look out of place. The top vent is just for air flow; however the bottom one is in front of a fan bracket next to the GPU so as to allow the heat to escape.
The last of the external parts is the back. Situated at the top of it is an empty space as there is no included power supply with this particular Jeantech product. Below this there is an area which a 120mm fan can be installed (another can also be installed at the front). Finally, there are the motherboard ports and graphics card slots; this part of the back panel opens out when the side is opened.
