The UK police have in the past few days hailed the capture of another Lulzsec member, this one being named as Topiary, one of the orchestrating higher ups of the Antisec movement. However, there is evidence mounting that in-fact the coppers may have been tricked into arresting the wrong man.
The arrestee was a 19 year old male from the Shetland islands on the North coast of Scotland; a real hackers fortress. In the past week his Twitter has grown silent with less and less information appearing elsewhere suggesting that indeed the police have got their man. However, Dailytech has collected some information that seems to show other wise.
Last month Lulzsec posted what they claim was the real identity for Mr Topiary, someone who has changed his online persona many a time to avoid detection. It’s not quite the dedication of plastic surgery, but it’s the internet version so it’s not bad I suppose. The info released by the hackers read:
Daniel Ackerman Sandberg
Birthday 13 August 1988
Location Uppsala, Sweden
Interests Zelda :D, Warhammer, Writing, Being with friends, more…
Now while of course this could be another misleading load of information, a chat log that surfaced – purportedly taking place between Topiary and an anonymous friend – alludes that in fact this information could be correct.
Topiary: to be honest I’m just gonna continue the Zelda casts as normal
Topiary: it would look REALLY weird if they stopped
The mention of Zelda is a little drop of information that corroborates the original “Doxing” (posting of real world identity) of Topiary. If this chat log is legitemate, some of the other things he says are illuminating too:
[removed]: well, hopefully someone will go after the troll you stole the name off
Topiary: they should have already
Topiary: hoping so dude
Topiary: just hoping that they’ll take the bait
Topiary: the fucker (sic) has been using Topiary for like a year
Topiary: trolling everyone
Topiary: for no reason
Topiary: so now we troll him, hope he’s getting raided
Of course this could all be more misdirection by the hacking groups trying to save some face after one of the higher ups in their over 9,000 strong organisation were busted, but it seems unlikely. I would imagine if one of them were taken, martyr status wouldn’t be far behind.
