While fanboys and business users the world over may have lamented the loss of their BBM service as well as all data related activities on their Blackberry devices, there was one unprecedented outcome from the event: road accidents in certain parts of the Middle East were massively reduced. Reports are in that road traffic accidents in Abu Dhabi were down 40%, with Dubai’s ones down 20%.
“Absolutely nothing has happened in the past week in terms of killings on the road and we’re really glad about that,” Chief of Dubai police Brig Gen Al Harethi told “The National” newspaper. “People are slowly starting to realise the dangers of using their phone while driving. The roads became much safer when BlackBerry stopped working.”
Abu Dhabi has recently put some effort into reducing road fatalities and accidents, with the father of a deceased footballer making a public appeal to citizens to not use their smartphones while driving. His son died,it is purported, by crashing into the back of a lorry while using his phone.
