Due to the popularity of the promo clip for the last game and the continuing online shorts realism and gritty – as opposed to gorey theme – Mortal Kombat could be getting a new movie and game treated in a similar way.
“The new game and the online shorts prompted us to consider a reboot of a brand we hadn’t been actively thinking about,” New Line Cinema president Tony Emmerich said. Apparently he’s looking to best the originals. If that’s the case, he’d be hard pressed to beat out their goofiness, their multitudes of uneeded flips and kicks and those dumb looking robot arms that apparently didn’t make Jax any stronger; it was inside him all along.
Purportedly the director of the web series, Kevin Tancharoen, is being considered for the directing role, which would be quite a step up for the man that has only handled TV shows so far, namely the Pussycat Dolls: Search for the next doll and Dancelife; wait, what? This is the gritty MK guy? Really?
There is one spanner in the works though, before Mr Dancelife can get his hands on it, Warner Bros. and Lawrence Kasanoff – a producer on the original movie – will need to sort out who owns the franchise. Just let it happen Lawrence, the first two movies were an embarassment to MK fans; even if they are a fun ironic watch now.
