Despite being a big part of US culture by introducing streaming movies as a norm, Netflix has taken its sweet time in becoming available in the UK. The only real rival at this point is Lovefilm, which is still in the early stages of its streaming development. There is also iTunes which is a bit more developed, though considered more of a music platform than anything, and Android Movies which is also a burgeoning service.
Netflix will be available from early 2012, offering up different packages to residents of this little isle and its Irish cousins, though Netflix currently refuses to comment on the pricing structure for their different options.
The announcing press release stated that, “Upon launch, Netflix members from the UK and Ireland will be able to instantly watch a wide array of TV shows and films right on their TVs via a range of consumer electronics devices capable of streaming from Netflix, as well as on PCs, Macs and mobile tablets and phones.”
It is expected that similar to the US expansion, Netflix will gradually invade other devices, like our Xbox 360s and TVs, pushing to dominate here as it has over the pond.
