Microsoft buy out Skype

Software giant Microsoft has bought the VOIP technology firm Skype, for a purported $8.5  billion, not a bad investment for ebay after all it seems; who bought the company from its creators 5 years ago for $2.6 billion.

They wern’t the only bidder though, with Facebook throwing their new school weight around. However, despite a lofty share price, Facebook is not Microsoft and doesn’t have the backroom cash available leaving the software firm to eventually pick up the tab.

Sky currently has over 660 million registered users with about 145 million regularly using the service. When it comes to users that actually pay for the service, the numbers drop down to just 8.8 million; though that’s not exactly shabby numbers.
