PC Fans will rejoice to here that the Mechwarrior reboot that has been teased for the past year or so is in-fact going to be not only free to play, but a PC exclusive. PC Gamer broke the story, with details suggesting that the intended launch date is sometime in mid-2012. The official title is MechWarrior Online.
“Starting from just before the Clan Invasion of 3050, MWO will tell the story of the Battletech universe in real-time,” said PC Gamer. Apparently you’ll be fighting for control of the “fictional Inner Sphere”, well of course it’s fictional PCG, we don’t have warring mechs yet.
The developer behind the game is Pirahna, with President Russ Bullock quoted as saying, “I think it’s really the MechWarrior you know.” He was also keen for it to be seen as a proper title, not the runt of the litter just because it was free to play. “It’s fully first-person. It’s not a new interpretation. We’re modernizing things a little bit, I think we’ll get to those questions, but certainly it’s MechWarrior.”
He has real reason to voice public concern however, as Pirahna hardly have a strong suit of games under their belt. They’ve apparently been working on MechWarrior since 2005, with their only really notified title before that being the mod-turned game title, Die Hard Nakatomi Plaza which received luke warm reviews. They’ve also been part of the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Duke Nukem’ Forever developments. Two other mildly tepid games.
