EA’s Origin Takes your Cake and Eats it Too – Smallprint Madness

In what seems like some sort of real world equivalent of the South Park Human CentiPad episode, EA games have bundled some of the most intrusive small print in their recent terms of service aggrement. Fudzilla is all over this so thanks to them for drawing this to the world’s attention; even if they are perhaps sensationalising it a little.

Under the title “Consent to Collection and Use of Data”, EA has a clause that states that users, by agreeing to this, allow EA to, “collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer, operating system, application usage, software, software usage and peripheral hardware.”

As if scared of a backlash for this inclusion, EA also include, IF YOU DO NOT WANT EA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, TRANSMIT OR DISPLAY THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE APPLICATION.”

EA are claiming that this is to help improve their services, but it will also allow them to sell information on to advertisers; something that most gamers arn’t onboard with.

While EA are very unlikely to be ballsy enought to scan your pictures, the vague wording like “related information” and the fact that they want to track your application and software usage does sound quite intrusive. Boycott the EA downloaders and new origin software; hopefully this will be removed.
