In many ways the biggest gaming launch of the year happened at midnight this morning. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 was made available at some 500 stores to those willing to wait in the November cold to get their fix of FPS royalty. There are reports in that there could be upwards of 9 million pre-ordered copies with 6 million or so picking up the game on the day of release.
The last title in the franchise produced by Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 2, made over a billion dollars for Activision, making it the most profitable game in history. This release looks set to break that record.
DLC for this game is also expected to generate massive ammounts of income for the publisher and its developer, though hopefully we’re a few weeks or months away from the first release for now.
“It’s not just about day one sales for these types of games – there’s a heavy online-multiplayer aspect,” said Steve Bailey, an analyst at Screen Digest.
“Gamers pay for enhanced subscription services such as Call of Duty: Elite’s extra social/profile features, or direct-purchase other content such as map packs.
While early reviews for the game seem to be pretty strong, gamers will be interested to see how well the title performs with a staff rejigging that occurred during the development period of the game.
