CD Projekt, the developer behind well the well received RPG series, The Witcher, has released a new screenshot for its upcoming engine change. Known as REDengine 3, it’s the third development of the in-house game engine and it’s looking very pretty.
However it’s not just about looks. CD Projekt has suggested that it’s intended for open world RPGs and that it will therefore have much more advanced tools for non-linear stories, based on real player choices. As PCGamesN points out, the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 will be made using this engine.
When this sort of cause and effect gameplay is combined with traditional story telling elements, Ada Badowski, head at CD Projeckt’s RED studio, he says it’s much easier to make what could be described as the next-generation of RPGs.
“Together with believable characters, a captivating tale and a world where players can roam freely without loading times, we will be able to move gaming to a new level with a realistic feel and full player immersion.” he said. “When working on our previous titles, I didn’t dream that we would achieve something like this. Thanks to the support of all our fans, now we have the possibility to use REDengine 3 and create something many RPG fans dream of.”
