Is Call of Duty Slipping in Popularity?
Despite the latest Call of Duty title, Black Ops 2, selling very well, it hasn’t broken any records and has sold less copies than other CoD titles, Black Ops, Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3.
Modern Warfare 2 sold 1.7 million copies when it was released, so we know that Black Ops 2 sold less than that. However it did do quite well, ranking it at the fourth highest selling game in the series.
The top three CoD title releases in the UK are ranked as follows:
- CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS – XB360/PS3/WII/DS/PC
- CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 3 – XB360/PS3/WII/DS/PC
- CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2 – XB360/PS3/DS/PC
In comparison, Eurogamer has it that Black Ops sold an impressive 2 million copies in its first week of release.
This time around, while Treyarch’s latest efforts didn’t sell as much as previous editions of the game, Xbox users still lead the pack, with over 60 per cent of the games sales going there. Comparatively, PlayStation purchases were around 38 per cent, leaving a surprisingly small 2 per cent for the PC platform.
