The first trailer for the Game of Thrones MMO has been released, showing some in-game action from the Seven Kingdoms. However much of the trailer is made up of a couple of set scenes presumably not in-game, including the clockwork cities of the world, one of them being stabbed with a dagger and scattered with coins. There’s also a short shot of presumably Jamie Lannister sitting on the iron throne…
And he still has his hand.
The rest of the trailer shows characters hacking away at each other with melee and bow weaponry, with a bit of blood flying, though it was difficult to say much about the combat since there was no UI or obvious key inputs to be pick up on. However revealed are several different types of weaponry. There’s two handed great swords, studded mauls, sword and shield combos and some mounts too. No mounted combat to be seen – a common addition in MMOs these days – but it wouldn’t be massively surprising considering the part jousting plays in the original books and TV show.
In terms of animation and graphics, it’s not massively impressive, perhaps somewhere in the region of World of Warcraft with a less cartoony feel. However since this is set to be free to play, it wasn’t likely to be cutting edge in that respect, but it looks good enough.
Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms is expected to be released sometime in 2013.
