The massive multiplayer online game based on George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire universe is set to be debuted by Bigpoint and Norwegian studio Artplant later this month.
The setting – while in the same world as the books – is going to use the TV show as its source material. While there aren’t too many big alterations to the story, this does potentially allow the MMO to continue on for several years – even if Mr Martin takes another half decade before releasing another book. The game’s story picks up just after the death of Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark, with the latter’s son Rob declared as King in the North and Stannis and Renly Baratheon jockeying for the throne.
It’s not known what sort of combat the game will involve, but it’s known that players will need to make alliances through PvP and siege battles. It also wouldn’t be Game of Thrones without political intrigue, perhaps allowing players to make their way through the world with a few whispered words. It certainly would be a very interesting game if instead of being a sword swinging knight, you could also become a powerful character in terms of influence, a Varys like character.
Known as Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms, a beta for the game is set to be unveiled later this year. When it’s finally released, it will be free to play.
